I suppose sdcc isnt really a beginers tool as it doesnt have any example code or tutorials, but the manual is pretty extensive and with the help of a decent C programming book you should be able to work it out.

I know C and C++ but I did on PC and never use these C compiler for 8051 coding.

So, as Jez says, you just need to read the SDCC Manual - that will tell you the specifics of how the SDCC implementation addresses its 8051 target. As you already know 'C', that should be sufficient?

As far as using some code someone else sends you i always feel its pretty pointless as a learning experiance

I agree entirely: http://www.8052.com/forum/read.phtml?id=60678
