Yes, that must be the reason. I kept thinking they were used for speed. I won't make that same mistake again...
I like the Roland JX hint. I found some circuits which are build around a 8051, latch and eprom. So a 89C51RD2 isn't a problem.
I also will post a message if I'm really stuck with my software. Thanks for all the replies and be carefull with fireworks. Project for 2004 : MMC (Midi Machine Control) firework control?
