Well if Microsoft can do it, why not the poor hardware guys? About the only development tool I found with a "free lifetime upgrade" are good multimeters. The ones that have good protection circuitry against most mistakes, they are almost idiotproof.
In case of Philips, they have shot themselves in the foot. Too many derivatives and their peculiar programming deviations.
