Hi George,
I understood exactly what you meant. My point about the Parthenon and the Hermitage is that at least over there y'all have real history. I have documents (incunabulae, medevial manuscripts) that were many centuries old when this nation was formed. I know that Dealey Plaza is historic, but is it really? Today, millenia later, we not only remember Alexander, we remember the name of his horse (Beucephalous). Will people in China remember who J.F.K. was in a.D. 4000? My other point is this. There are benefits to be found here in the city. But for no more frequently than we visit them, I'd rather make the drive. It really is a matter of being a nice place to visit. I just don't want to live here. |
