The real problem in keeping ANY electronic system on 'forever' is heat. If there is no heat build up there is no problem unless the design is faulty.
One problem with 'forever' systems is that some people believe in testing as proof. There are software and hardware problems that require a confluence of events to show. It may take days, weeks or even months for such a confluence to show.
