With windows 98 the dos box and the full dos prompts are different beasts,the dos box is a virtual dos machine working in protected mode with virtual drivers while the dos prompt is a real mode.The timings for interrupts and so on are different in the two cases which possibly explains why it ones in one mode and not the other.
