Hooking up a IDE HDD is no real difficulty, I've just been doing just that with a 8051. Don't use the 8522 like many others, it's slow and clumbersome to control. If you like I can let you have a copy of my code/design. As for the MP3 decoding take a look at the MAS3507/STA013.
