Not necessarily.

Where serial comms requirements are modest - and especially for transmit when you are the master - bit-banging can be perfectly feasible.

eg, I am bit-banging two 1-WireTM interfaces while also handling 3 hardware UARTs, hardware I2C, TCP/IP, and GPRS...
