I remember being about 11 years old and noticing this when my dad and I were working on our family car- this was his explanation of why we don't all go "boom" Dear Steve, Hi, I certainly don’t know much about fuel tanks, but I assume when you put the cap of the fuel tank there is no outlet to let the high vapor pressure of gasoline to expel the air. assume that one fills 1/5th of the fuel tank in a petrol station and put the cap. The remaining 4/5th of the fuel tank will be air. Assume the temperature is 38 degree centigrade so due to high vapor pressure of gasoline some of it vapors to the above empty space and pressure of the above mixture exceeds 1 atmosphere( a ready to explode mixture).
