About 5 years ago I did such project. It was not easy because lack of hardware here. The software I used, was simple DOS 8051 assembler and could you imagine that work! Some pictures: Display board, same with LED Dot Matrixes deinstalled, Contorl Board. Display board contains 6 LED Dot Matrixes 8x8 dual colours. Control board supports external network control via RS-232, Sound output (2Mb of EPROM for raw data installed) and is able to syncronize up to 4 Display boards via internal network. Displays may be configured in-line (up to 8x192), or in two lines (16x96). As about schematic, Display board uses ULN2803 and alot of SMD-transistors. All project is based on AT89S8252.
