I2C and SPI are tradenames. I2C is known as TWI (two wire interface) in Atmel speak, SPI is a trademark of National Semiconductor. Basically it is a clocked serial interface - you have a clock, data in, data out and maybe a select line. Some clock on the falling edge, some on the rising edge. It always pays to read the datasheets - each device has it peculiarities. |
