If you are going to get the reference design with the code on the CD, you'd better check with Atmel to see what compiler they use.

Chances are Atmel has continued to use the Keil tools internally...so if you don't get Keil the code you receive with the reference design will won't be useable until you re-write it all. That doesn't sound like much fun to me.
