So rather than worry about the inability of C to adequatly handle the floating point is it not better to use the cordic core and simple bolt a suitable 8052 interface onto that? Having looked at the code there is nothing very scarey in it except some rather large vectors,in fact i was expecting the code to be a little bit more hairy then it actualy is.
