I think that he should first develop only a basic calculator which will enable him to be conversant with using LCD and the keypad. Then upgrade the project with scientific functions.

For Scientific functions he may do the hard work the easyway by putting the entire sceintific functions' printed tables into Lookup Tables in his code. But he might need much larger code memory ?? That way he may not be needing hard mathematics to do in assembly.
