#79466 - How 70 cts can bring a project to ruin!

My general conclusion is that this circuit is crap.

I agree!

I don't know what shocked me more, this link or the two positive karma points the poster got.

Please keep the hands off such cheap and trashy 'solutions'! These are circuits which CAN work under certain assumptions, in a laboratory with stable input voltage coming right from a voltage regulator. But when having real world supply contaminated by noise, dips, glitches, brown-outs, varying source and load impedances (!), these 'solutions' tend to work rather strange and can result in total desaster!

The link make you believe that all the manufacturers of sophisticated switchers are stupid idiots wasting components and money. But to tell the truth, only the added features of such a switcher, like

-current limit protection
-thermal shutdown
-undervoltage lockout
-delayed start-up
-soft start
-bandgap reference
-internal supply voltage filtering to enhance PSRR
-stablized oscillator
-etc.

make them worth to be used at all. And the circuit in the link does not show any one of these necessary features... Hallelujah!
