There's been no reference to the old three terminal regulator and switching transistor circuit! That's an old classic - it works well but doesn't like short circuits! When I first stumbled across that design I had to look twice - the inductor gave it away and I had to 'scope it to see it oscillate. But nowadays, there's plenty of product that does exactly what we want without having to be a power supply expert.
