By the way searched the forum for this lcd and found many posts from you. So finally did you get it done or you changed the lcd.

I am using 128X64 LCD's for my applications. I dropped the idea of using PCF8544 because of the only reason of unceratinity about availability in future. But as steve said this controller is setting a standard like those Hitachi HD44780 then no problem in going ahead with PCF8544.
