#8080 - RE: Lots of power needed
Hi All,

I bought a bunch of 8x8 displays with Super Red and normal Green 8x8 displays. I figured the Super Red would allow me to reduce their power to about 5mA or less to match the green intensity. One bonus is that this will be used primarily at night, so I won't need full intensity.

The modules I will be making consist of 4 columns of 2 rows of the 8x8 LED maxtrixes. This makes a 32 x 16 pixel unit. I figure one PC type power supply will be able to handle two of them, but I'm sill worried on how long the power cables can be without having to be quite bulky.

I am more of a software type, but this project is really forcing me to expand my hardware knowledge: schematics, circuit boards layout, power supplies, part selection. I think I'll have more fun once there is some hardware to write the software to do the nifty graphics and special effects. The next phase is to synchronize the display with music.

Thanks for the comments/suggestions guys.

We use low current LEDs. 2 mA. Can you get low current LEDs that meet your requirements?

I assume that the big screens use more efficient LEDs, otherwise they would need their own power plant.
