Long before the EM4095 apparition I had contacts with EM Marine comp. I build my firs tag readers using discrete components but realising the same functions as EM4095 IC ( the filter was an opamp analogue 8 poles LP and the PLL an cd4069)
When I obtained the first samples of EM4095 I replace the hardware without any software changes.

BTW . With discrete components I always obtained better results with the cost of complexity
