From Prahlad Purohit : "ISP stands for In System Programming meaning you don't have to remove your chip from the application board for programming it. In stead it can be programmed In System without removing from there. You have a programming header or something using which you program it. Philips IC's can be programmed directly via the UART. for atmel you need the SPI etc."
