Many 8051 variants support ISP via the serial UART.

What other sort of UART is there...? ;-)

Most ISP PC programmes allow the selection of COM ports 1 through 4 for connection to the 8051.

That is just the result of lazy windoze programming; there is absolutely no reason whatsoever for such an artificial restriction - especially these days when USB serial adaptors are commonplace.

However, my laptop has no serial port. I can use a USB/serial adaptor but what COM port number does this appear on?

This depends entirely on your PC configuration!

If you don't know, look in Device Manager under "Ports (COM & LPT)"
