EPROM is not RAM, not the confusion is complete.

If You, what may be the case, have the EPROM (parallel - not serial, i hope) mapped to be read by !RD, then it WILL read as XDATA.

Which Eprom are you using barnd - type?
IS the data and your code to be in the same chip?
how is it mapped?
How big is your code
at which address (approx) do you want the matlab data.
