When mobile phones took full credit card sized SIM cards? My first commercial (non-military) job was with Orbitel, a pioneer of GSM technology. I remember their prototype GSM phone - it was the size of a large fridge. Those were the days when they were called "car phones" - but this one needed a Transit van! When mobile phones didn't have SIM cards? Yep - the identity was in an EEPROM chip, called a "NAM" in those days. When mobile calls cost more inside the M25 (UK residents only!). Yep. The UK analogue cellular system was called "TACS" (Total Access Communication System); some extra frequncies were added to meet demand inside the M25, giving E-TACS (was that "Extended" or "Enhanced" TACS?) My first job at Orbitel was on their CDLC modem - for sending data over the Vodafone (E-)TACS analogue cellular network ("Vodata") When all you used them for (as in the only thing they could do) was to make phone calls? SMS (Text messaging) was in the GSM specs from the outset - but I don't think anyone ever foresaw how it would take off! Ah... them were the days... |
