There is always the possibility that an 8052's external BUS could be connected up to a 16-bit wide memory module, FLASH chip, or 16-bit peripheral such as a D/A or A/D. Depending upon what is going on there may be cases where variable alignment could be a big deal on an 8052 platform!!
