Same board: I would consider 1) RxD to TxD direct full duplex at very high baud rate (2 processors max, software cost only) or 2)dual port memory (if you use memory mapped I/O or other high bit decoder that can be expanded the cost is ~$4 for 1k) or 3) I2C as you have it.
