I forgot not the initial question.
But to find a better protocol, I want to findout, what you think, what is bad on I2C. And it sounds at first, only your I2C implementation was bad.
You named the arbitration process, but on a single master application an arbitration can never occur.

To your initial question: Please tell, which point should be better, e.g. speed, distance, ...
