What is stopping you from ditching these common-cathode displays, and getting common-anode ones instead?

Using the common-cathode displays (which you presumably already have?) makes the job harder; buying new, common-anode, displays could make it easier - which one you choose depends on your particular assessment of the relative "cost" of the options.
