You stated that I (well, not me, but the circuit...) will consume always 5mA (in the example given), whether the TOR is closed or not. However, unless I'm wrong, but when the TOR is open, then both sides of the resistor will be connected to +5V, since the IO pin of the PCF8574 is set as input, thus logically high.
