I think the Prolific or FTDI chips would be an excellent choice.
I have used the Cypress usb/serial reference design (they have a "kit" at Digikey). The term "kit" is used loosely though... there are no parts, so you have to scrounge up a USB cable, a MAX232 or equiv, and a Cypress Encore chip (and program it!). But the hex file (w/ source), schematic (such that it is) and driver are all there. Then you can make your device look like a COM port on any PC. You're screwed for Linux though. One of the other options might be better there. Also, Cygnal and Atmel also have serial-usb reference designs that can utilized too. FWIW, I've used Cypress but will probably switch to something else if I have to do it again (likely Atmel because they will give me the source). Cygnal told me to shove off. GB |
