#100299 - Series termination prevents overshot Responding to: ???'s previous message |

while the series termination is supposed to decrease EMI radiation... When the edge of signal reaches the unterminated reciever end, then a doubling of signal amplitude takes place. Without the methode of series termination, then an eventually existing protection diode inside reciever can turn-on, forcing current to flow inadequately to ground. Because the signal becomes suddenly short-circuited, but only when the protection diodes turn-on, this can tremendeously distort what you want to transmit. When using series termination on the other hand, height of signal edge is halfed by the voltage dividing due to the action of series termination impedance and characteristic impedance of cable (which must equal for this reason). Means, what enters the cable is an edge of only half the supply voltage (when emiting a step from logical low to high). When it reaches the end of cable the doubling of signal height, that takes place then, restores the signal again, so that it undergoes a full swing now. Kai |
