Try to use the shift registers HCF4094 for 7-segment display. You only need 3 pins for any number of digits. They can be connected without resistors in each segment. I use HDSP-H101 displays. They are low current, common anode, high efficiency red displays. If you would like to control light intensity, you can reduce anode voltage.
