Then the best solution should be the MAX7219, which can drive up to 64 LEDs directly (constant current output stages).

Furthermore the brightness can be adjusted in software.

It consume only 3 port lines and can be cascaded. So two or more MAX7219 consume also only 3 port lines.


And also the MM5451 is a nice LED driver circuit (35 LEDs per circuit), which can drive LEDs above 5V.
