BTW, Erik, LPC doesn't tell us much.
OK, Philips LPC9xx

I'd be interested in what, exactly, you recommend, if I were in the O/P's position. The general mention of IIC or SPI doesn't do as much as the mention of specific devices would do.
can't say, who knows why he wants to include the antique

There's been so much discussion of why an 8255 is bad for new designs, and economic and supply-chain issues certainly would be one consideration, but I'd like to see the specific devices that would be useable in its place.
there is no "specific device" the solution depend on the app, this is not pantyhose. See my earlier post (PSD, shiftregs, CPLD/FPGA discretes ....

Aside from programmable logic, however, I'd like to know what people here on this forum are using in place of devices of the 8255 class. It would be interesting to know what the performance of such devices is.
a) nothing
b) another micro

One of my current products use an 8 port SILabs micro providing enough pins for an external 128kb RAM and all I/O including an IIC FRAM.
Another uses 2 SILabs micros and a LPC935 the 3 plus a FRAM connected by IIC plus a Cypress USB master chip conneted via SPI.
