If you think about it as a general switch matrix problem, not particularly as a keypad, it makes sense to make it fully decode-able. In other words, to spare pins, and have e.g. 16 switches, one can connect it into 4x4 matrix and have them fully detectable, only if one uses the diodes.

Such matrix is used for example in pinballs.
