If you have the option of driving this particular setup with open-drain, that's the way to do it. Weak pullup will do the job, too, but push-pull, though not likely to go "poof," could, in fact, do so in cases where the sink and source currents could combine to do damage. So far, however, I've not seen a case wherein this is likely. That's not to say they don't exist.
