Hello Marshall,
I did a remote control using a AT89C2051 a while back. Here is the schematic. http://members.aol.com/cpu8052/2051rmct.gif. I used the power down mode to save on batter current drain. It only consumed 400 MicroAmps while in the power down mode (PCON |= 0x02;). Any time a key is depressed it gets diode OR'd to the reset circuit. It was very reliable.
