An ethernet physical interface can be used to transport many different protocols; the internet uses IP - the Internet Protocol

So, you need both an ethernet physical interface and IP protocol software.

Then there are many other protocols that build on IP; eg, TCP/IP, UDP/IP - as Neil says, these are the terms you need to search on...
