You can test the Hyperterminal connection by hooking up another PC to emulate the 8051. If that works, the Hyperterminal connection is fine.

The best way to start testing a serial communications link in an 8051 is to program it upon initialization to send a canned phrase that you try to spot in hyperterminal. Thereafter the 8051 merely echoes any characters it receives back out the serial port. Once you've got that accomplished, you have the basic 8051 serial communications down and the configuration of hyperterminal.

Hyperterminal may throw you some curves though, if its configured to echo anything it receives too. Its all part of the learning process. :)
