is whine not supposed to make windows apps run under Linux?
Anyhow, - this is NOT to defame Linux, just fact - 98% of the QUALITY tools for the '51 are not available for Linux, so for a serious '51 developer to switch to linux is, in my opinion, sheer folly. Now PLEASE do not complain, the reason e.g. Keil is not available for Linux, is business - nothing else and, while business as a reason for a decision is obnoxious to some, it is REALITY. As you know I am a Linux advocate but I agree with Erik. Even I keep an old 1GHz Celeron machine running Windows 2000 just for my 8051 needs. Linux is great and is making great strides on the desktop in some areas - you only have to look at the regional governments that are moving over to it. But the niche areas, like chip programmimg, will be the last to move so in the mean time you probably need to keep a Windows machine. As to wine, this too works well for many applications but the one area it still needs development is in driving serial ports a la Windows which is what you need for chip programming. Ian |
