#128795 - The good thing about the exceptions in the German
Responding to: ???'s previous message
I would never want to learn the german language as a foreign person. It's full of terrible exceptions.

But many do, to be able to read Rilke, Goethe, etc. in original, as we learn english, to read Shakespeare

The good thing about the exceptions in the German language is that they do not hinder you when reading. When writing/speaking you do provoke an occasional laugh (e.g. when using plural of 'vogel' with bad grammar), but do get understood. I am (as are most Germans) not faultless in the application of the German grammar, but do remember some gerat goofs from the past.

I guess German is the only language where the grammar is a bigger volume than the dictionary :)
