i think that you can't do this. because it takes 2 machine cycles for processor to understand that it is a countable event. at 12 MHz frequency it's about 2 microseconds, and max countable external frequency (event) is 500 KHz. if you use a 24 MHz crystal the countable frequency changes to 1 MHz.
