Hi Alex.
I suffer of the same problem updating from 8252 to 8253. According to my experience: - use no caps (datasheet says 5+/-5pF - use 0pF) - put 1M from X1 to ground - most important: be sure that Vcc rise time is low (<5mS) You can see http://www.8052.com/forum/read.phtml?id=132322 for some discusion about AT89S8253.
