True enough. And, as always, answering the question of whether or not "simpler for the processor" is actually better than "simpler for the coder" requires consideration of a whole bunch of tradeoffs that have not been discussed here. It's up to the OP to decide if he actually needs to spend time writing some custom conversion routines, or whether scanf() meets his speed and memory footprint requirements.
