To be honest, 9/10 times with my 8-bit firmware, I rarely find the need to use any of the standard library routines at all. Most of them are either total overkill, or unreliable in the context of an embedded environment (scanf etc.)

Anyway, Raghunathan has got what he wanted, so it's all good.
