What exactly do you mean by this? Please elaborate more.

And what makes you think that this particular part of your code is responsible for the unexpected behaviour? Couldn't it be something else, like the output of the READ subroutine? Have you examined the output the READ subroutine produces?

(maybe blindness or donkeyness)

I suspect (not know, mind you!) that part of your blindness is focussing on this particular piece of code, while your actual problem might be caused somewhere else entirely. At least post your complete code please.
