Andy: Unfortunately, that relies upon the particular language extensions of a specific compiler - but you haven't stated what compiler!
William Thorp: It is not necessary to have the right compiler. Most assemblers and 8051 "C" compilers have similar syntaxs and directives, 8051 mnemonics are very standard. the issue is not "do you have the right compiler" but "which compiler do you have" Especially for a newbie it is very confusing to get 4711 errors in a compile becuse the means of defining a bit is different in the sample code and whichever compiler he uses.
