An analogy is the travelling salesforce before the days of mobile phones: there was no way to know exactly where a salesman would be - so you couldn't call him. Instead, you would rely on him to call the office on some suitable schedule. Each time he called in, you could receive his reports, and give him further instructions. But it relied upon the salesman initiating the call - ie, "polling-in". As an extension to this, you could give the salesforce pagers - these simply tell the salesman, "call in NOW!" |
