#152373 - The E Strobe,,,
Responding to: ???'s previous message
It is indeed present because of the early "Motorola" type MCUs that were numbered as 68xx and "Hitachi" types that were numbered as 63xx.

It is also interesting to note that some of the graphics types LCD controllers that have a parallel type interface have a mode pin called C86. This pin will in one state sets two other control pins to be RD/ and WR/. In the other state of the mode pin these other two pins become R/W and E. The behavior was meant to easily facilitate connection of 8xxx MCUs or 6xxx MCUs.

There were at one time several popular MCU peripheral chips that had a similar mode setting input called the MOTEL pin that selected "Motorola" or "Intel" mode.
