Confusing! Actually one might confuse that 3rd state is logic state while its not a logic state at all. pin still has two logic state and having third electronic state.
not at all confusing, it would be if you said 3 logic states.
You, yourself is tri-state awake, drowsy and sleeping. When drowsy, you are neither awake nor sleeping.
