Now coming back to this thread, are you using a 12V/400mA solenoid or 12V / 1 Amp?

Even if it is 400mA solenoid, BS170 is really not suitable choice. Due to high in-rush current drawn by any inductive load, care must be taken to chose a suitbale device capable of handling the worst case conditions. I already invited your attention to this issue in your old thread:
